S for Science

This thread will deal with science. I’m a linguist, so I’ll probably start with something related to human language and the scientific study of it. But my interests go beyond linguistics. This said, I’m about to start a new journal on BIOLINGUISTICS with my colleague and friend Cedric Boeckx from Harvard. More on this project soon, too.

Very interested in your work, very excited about the deepening ties between formal linguistics and the ‘harder’ sciences. Will definitely check back often for updates on the journal.

The BIOLINGUISTICS journal website is now open to the public:

Thanks. Thankyou also for UNDERSTANDING MINIMALISM,good book, would be lost without it.
ciao, mort

ps-Why is there no one else here? It seems the linguists dominate, at least here.

Linguists dominate the entire planet!!! HAHAHAHAHAEVILLAUGHTER

No really, send more paramedics (burp), I mean scientists….

paramedics certainly are handy, but only if you intend intend hurting or breaking something. we linguists tend to lead docile lives, hidden away in musty corners, collecting dust. However, I feel the reason for the uh, lack of participation is probably due to the fact that science seems a daunting topic, even for punks. It is a bit serious, but serious is not necessarily bad. I don’t feel qualified really, to begin a discussion on science at large, perhaps monsieur grohmann should say something, something about uhmm, Edge Features. what do you understand by edge features? any links you think might prove useful would be uhm, useful. I’m trying to piece together enough of a reference/definition to actually use them in my thesis for derivations, but they seem to be slippery bastards, difficult to define.the writings of chomsky not helping much. although I realise he might be the only one sayin anything about them.

I don’t really know about “edge features,” I’m skeptical about a lot of Chomsky’s recent mechanical claims. I’m into Distributed Morphology myself, check out David Embick’s homepage for some good papers: http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~embick/ab.html

Re the call for me to say something on edge features — I’ll try and post something soon. Academic life is a bit crazy “at the moment”…

FYI (re Biolinguistics): this looks like a great even in the Dominican Republic, the Biolinguistic Investigations conference, details to follow soon here. You’ll find me there; am looking into a Dom Rep trip from February 19-25, 2007 or so.

One of the organizers, Anna Maria di Sciullo, is also going to put together a second Biolinguistic Investigations conference in Venice with Memo Cinque. The theme is going to be “Grammar and Variation” and I’ve been invited to say something there. It’s planned for June 1-3, 2007.

If things work well next year (something I can’t confirm yet), I might be organizing a third related conference, Biolinguistic Explorations, in Cyprus, most likely October 22-24, 2007.

Biolinguistic investigation huh? sound cool, but a low-level student type such as myself would not aspire to the greatness of conference attending, especially not abroad. But it sounds very interesting. Over here in ye olde south africa were having the “cradle of language” conference in November, which I’ll be able to attend seeing as I work here. There are going to be some interesting discussions, some smart people, but none of the good stuff, no syntax to speak of really. But URL is http://www.clc.sun.ac.za/ , check it out, nice pic of stellenbosch anyway. but I await your comments on the EF, K, though I’ve already pulled the “Chomsky said it” trick, the man does take a lot of flak, but poeple still use his name weightily, throw it around like a brick.

And JKP, I printed out an article from the website you posted, but I also claim hectic academic life “at the moment”, shit man, more like “for the last couple of months”. But I shall peruse it at my leisure at some stage when all calms down and maybe I’ll have some things to say about it. Lowly student that I am.

This is awesome. If you haven’t already, check out some of the recent papers presented at Society of Neuroscience. Neurolinguisitics is vogue as hell right now.
