ENG 235: MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX OF ENGLISH
Linguistics Section , Department of English Studies , University of Cyprus
http://www.punksinscience.org/kleanthes/courses/UCY04F/MASOE
Room 004, Phone: x2106 *** Office Hours: TUE/FRI 15.00-16.00 & by appointment
DESCRIPTION
The course investigates the internal structure of words and the rules by which word formation takes place, and provides a thorough study of English grammar from a formal perspective. It examines the relationship between syntax and morphology by considering the effects that some morphological processes have on the syntactic computation. It also considers the phrase structure properties of English and develops a minimalist approach to the Principles-and-Parameters theory of human language. This course then explores (i) the different properties of main and embedded clauses, (ii) movement operations, such as Yes/No- and Wh-questions, passives, and raising constructions, (iii) a selection of further issues related to the grammar of clausal and nominal structure, and (iv) locality concerns in the grammar of human language. [amended from the undergraduate prospectus]
ASSESSMENT
Regular attendance is strongly advised! Besides the class lectures, there will be:
Points 1 and 4 go partially hand in hand: I will call up every student at least once throughout the semester to present at least one homework exercise which will be the basis for grade evaluation. This means you have pretty much one shot for this grade, but feel free to come and talk to me after.
READING
There is one required textbook of which every student must have his/her own copy!
Adger, David. 2003. Core Syntax: A Minimalist Approach. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
There will be a course folder in the library with material for the morphology classes (and more). Further references will be given in the first week; selected readings might also be distributed later.
