DESCRIPTION

The course aims to provide an understanding of the principles underlying the expression of meanings through language. It surveys basic topics in semantics such as sense and reference, lexical semantics and basic sense relations, semantics and grammar, simple logic. It also provides an introduction to pragmatics and the negotiation of interpersonal meanings in contexts of situation. This course rounds off the students' introduction to theoretical linguistics and allows them to participate actively in further electives in linguistics.

ASSESSMENT

Regular attendance is strongly suggested! Besides the lectures, there will be evaluation for:

1. one mid-term exam covering the first part of the course (Mid-Term Exam counts 20%)

2. one final exam covering the second part in the exam period (Final Exam counts 40%)

3. one take-home exam covering the entire course (Take-Home Exam counts 40%)

4. presence and class participation (evaluation up to discretion of instructor)

The format of the in-class exams will be very similar to the exercises wešll be doing in class. The take-home exam goes beyond practicing semantics and pragmatics as done in class.

READING

There is one required textbook [available from Moufflon Bookshop] ‹ that means, every student must have his/her own copy!

Further references will be given in Class 1; selected readings will be distributed in class. The readings for pragmatics will be made available for photocopy later on in this semester.
