FINAL CLASSES - FINAL POSTING? [NOV 21]

The final changes I made to the course syllabus can now be viewed and downloaded. I thought it would be a good idea to practive movement issues (both A- and A') in class on Tuesday. The final three classes will then be tours de force on selected issues of the final four chapters. For this I suggest you read through each of the chapters indicated for each class and tell me what issues you would like to discuss. If you don't tell me about what interests you, I will do "my program" -- which will invariably tougher. Since the final set of exercises will only draw from what we do in class, I suggest you do prepare a little for these classes. Since I have exercise grades for everyone (except those of you who never showed up when I called their names repeatedly), I will not require in-class exercises anymore.

SYLLABUS IV [NOV 18]

I only did some minor cosmetic changes to the course syllabus.

FINAL PAPER [NOV 13]

The final paper is due on December 14 before 10am in my office (or pigeon hole/mailbox). Since I will be leaving my office right after that time and travel a bit, I cannot accept any late papers.

SYLLABUS III [NOV 4]

There is an updated version of the course syllabus, making room for two classes on Case Theory (and one less later on).

SYLLABUS II [OCT 15]

There is an updated version of the course syllabus, since we spent more time on X'-Theory. There are no classes next week!

SYLLABUS I [OCT 11]

OK, it looks like we'll have to do a bit more on constituency and phrase structure. For this purpose, I slightly modified the course syllabus accordingly. On Friday we will finish with chapter 2: please draw all trees for the sentences from Exx. 2.2-3 and take a stab at Ex. 2.4 (= read the corresponding parts in the chaptert, such as one-substitution). We will then introduce functional categories (= chap. 3), but that should really be straightforward.

TAKE-HOME FINAL [OCT 5]

As it says on the course syllabus, your final will be take-home in the form of a set of exercises. But I also offer an alternative: if you feel more creative or would like to practie your writing skills, you may write a short paper instead. I have prepared (well, stolen and adopted) some guidelines for writing a paper for this course. These can be found here. I will also pass them out in class on Friday and say a few things about this.

HOMEWORK [SEP 14]

I'm very sorry for the homework mix-up that crystalized today! It's the usual cut-and-paste story: I put the exercises down before I changed chapters/classes 3 and 4-5, that's all. In any case, the new syllabus can be downloaded now.

CLASSES, *FINAL* [SEP 12]

Our first (of two) Wednesday classes is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 14, starting at 2.00pm (14h).

CLASSES, THE SECOND [SEP 12]

Our first (of two) Wednesday classes is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 14. However, we have a departmental board meeting starting at 9.30 and it's likely to last until 1pm or so. I will bring this up in tomorrow's class, but if you happen to read this today, consider whether 1.30pm would be a suitable starting time.

CLASSES, THE FIRST [SEP 6]

I just updated the syllabus, which I'll pass out on Friday. There will be two Wednesday classes, in week 2 and week 3. They will start at 12pm, as usual, but go until 2pm, with a short break, to make up for lost time (three regular classes will be cancelled).

TEXTBOOKS [SEP 6]

Both the obligatory and the suggested textbook are available from Moufflon Bookshop .
