HANDOUTS & PAPERS [APR 20]

Most of the handouts that I have received so far don't even resemble a handout -- why don't you take exisiting handouts as your target? I have provided handouts for most of my classes, but I fail to see any connection between mine and any of yours. Likewise, if you search the web, you'll find a lot of handouts -- these too look very different from yours. Lastly, think about what you want from a handout as a reader/listener -- and compare with existing ones. Is this really what you want? As regards your final paper, I will not read anything over 30 pages and neither will I read anything that does not have (i) full prose throughout, (ii) numbered sections, and (iii) consecutively numbered examples.

MAKE-UP CLASS [APR 7]

Our final make-up class in on Wednesday, April 20 -- there are no other rooms available at the time all students can make it (basically, after 3pm), so it will be from 5 to 7pm in room A 109.

ATTENDANCE [MAR 7]

The time and effort I put into preparing classes does not stand in a reasonable relation to your attendance in class. For this reason, I will hand out an attendance list for each of the remaining classes where you put an X into the relevant box. This will give me a better idea who actually comes -- and who doesn't, and who subsequently will be graded rather low for participation. I will count all students and I will count all Xs: if there are more Xs than students, everyone will be treated as if s/he didn't show up! So don't "help out a friend" by making him or her present -- you will only make everyone absent!

HANDOUTS [FEB 17]

Remember that you have to write up your talk into an extended handout (which will be graded): no (pure) prose, keywords instead Ð but it should be structured (like a paper in a way already): intro, summary/conclusion, sub-headings, plus information on title and presenters' names as well as references , of course. The idea is that the final product should be selfexplanatory for someone to read through Ð and if it's well done, you'll be halfway there for your paper as well! All handouts will be distributed to the class when they're done (= one week after the presentation).

PRESENTATIONS [FEB 17]

The first round of presentations is over and I am well pleased. As you have realized, it is important to time one's presentation appropriately Ð every minute you go over your allotted time, you take off from the other group's presentation. And from your question period... I know this is not the most popular aspect of a presentation, but it has to be practiced, so we will spend some time rehashing the presentations in the next class if there is no discussion time left!

MATERIALS [FEB 7]

Since some of you experience problems with the homepage(s) and/or downloads, I put a folder in my mailbox in which I will put all handouts and transparencies as we go along. Please return the folder after you copied the relevant pages and leave the order and organization of material intact. If you spot any other mistake on these pages, please let me know. I think I double-checked everything (incl. various due dates!). I also updated the READINGS-PAGE a little and will try to stay up-to-date here!

WEBSTUFF [FEB 7]

I double-checked all course pages and they seem to work fine. Please let me know if there are any more difficulties. As I said, many of the PDF-files are big and take a long time to download from a (slow) dial-up connection. I would advise you to use a computer from within the university (a broadband connection). Alternatively, you can go to the newly created materials folder (SEE ENTRY ABOVE).

CLASSES [JAN 28]

If you check the online syllabus on the DOWNLOADS PAGE, you will notice that I changed the class from April 14 to April 13, a Wednesday . I hope this is OK with everyone.

PRESENTATIONS II [JAN 27]

Please check the PRESENTATIONS PAGE whether your name shows up in the correct group. The italicized people at the bottom are unaccounted for: IF your name shows up and IF you would like to take this course for credit (= receive a grade), please rectify the situation!

DUE DATES [JAN 27]

I'm working on the exam date set for TIES for May 16. This means the term paper will be due on May 23 at 10am in my office, which gives me a week to read them all and grade you for this course. The abstract will be due March 31 at 10am in my office. Feel free to email me your work instead of printing it yourself.

READINGS [JAN 20]

I set up a page for CLASS READINGS which contains all relevant chapters and sections of scholarly works to read if you want to prepare well for each class (or to read up on some of the things we talked about).

UPDATES [JAN 20]

As you can see, the latest news & information update shows up on top of older ones.

PRESENTATIONS I [JAN 19]

I just created a PRESENTATIONS PAGE with information and details on the class presentations.

DISCLAIMER [JAN 18]

In the absence of time for better preparation, the simple layout/design of my course pages will stay as is. I even topped my alreadyunbeatable system and colour-coded each page with a terrible background!
