ENG 573: TOPICS IN ENGLISH SYNTAX
Linguistics Section, Department of English Studies, University of Cyprus

ASSESSMENT [APR 7]
One part of the course assessment are exercises. As discussed in class today (70% no shows!), you will have to do any one exercise from chapters 2 through 4 and any one exercise from chapters 5 through 10 -- two exercises in total. Each answer shouldn't be that long, but some might require you to spend some time thinking about them. The exercises are due May 9, the first day after the Easter Break -- the other deadlines are: April 21 in class (abstract of up to 1,000 words) and May 16 (paper).
CLASSES III [MAR 10]
Yes, yes, yes -- we're running behind a little. But as I said, we can do all this in our own pace and if that means going over some more background assumptions and analyses a little, so be it. The latest attempt of a schedule is online (see also the DOWNLOADS-PAGE). Our double-feature class will then deal with Theta Domains exclusively and I hope to get through the entire chapter -- and deal with chapter 2 in the next three classes leading up to it. In the end we can count ourselves lucky if we get to (and through) chapter 8 (on Binding), but we can always continue next semester...
GB-REVIEW [FEB 17]
Just to make sure we're all on the same page: for next class (FEB 28!), I want you to read: CAB (8.3, 10.3, 11), HNG (chap. 1 and the entire sect. 2.2), and the last few class handouts, focusing on raising and control, esp. the second part of Class 8. I can also recommend downloading and/or reading the class notes of one of the world's leading syntacticians and best teachers, Howard Lasnik, which can be found here (see also DOWNLOADS-page).
CLASSES II [FEB 10]
The make-up class next Wednesday (February 16) will take place at 3pm in the usual room (E 103), unless I make a further announcement.
CLASSES I [JAN 28]
If you check the online syllabus on the DOWNLOADS PAGE, you will notice that I changed the class from April 14 to April 13, a Wednesday. I hope this is OK with everyone. It also looks like we'll have to cancel Class 17 on March 24 here I'm sure you won't be too disappointed. The section on "Movement and Minimality" will thus be held only one class, with additional material for home practice, if you like.
DUE DATES [JAN 27]
I'm working on the exam date set for TIES for May 16. This means the term paper will be due on May 16 at 10am in my office, which gives me a week to read them all and grade you for this course. The abstract will be due March 31 at 10am in my office. Feel free to email me your work instead of printing it yourself.
DISCLAIMER [JAN 18]
In the absence of time for better preparation, the simple layout/design of my course pages will stay as is. I even topped my alreadyunbeatable system and colour-coded each page with a terrible background!
