MASOE-COURSE NEWS

FINAL [NOV 27 ]

As announced last class, the final exam will be take-home.

REMAINDER [NOV 17 ]

I posted the final revised syllabus taking into considerations the "delays" and exercises of the past few classes.

REMAINDER [OCT 9]

I posted a revised syllabus which contains some minor changes for the classes right after the mid-term. What I will do next is introduce some theoretical notions to clarify some syntactic assumptions (structure, hierarchy, etc.). We will then delve into the book. To ease your readings, I will hand out most of the HNG-related material in tomorrow's class already. With this in hand, it should make it easier to read/browse through the assigned readings as relevant for the classes. I will say a few things about this in class tomorrow. If we progress slowly, we'll cover all the handouts online already; if we can cope well, we'll do more as per syllabus.

MID-TERM [OCT 6]

I posted a very basic key to the mid-term exam which, frankly, I thought was solved pretty poorly by the majority of the students.

EXERCISES 2 [SEP 24]

I posted remaining introductory syntax exercises on the Exercises-page. Each block (from 1 to 6) counts as a homeowrk to be graded (the system should be clear by now). If you hand them in by Friday, September 29 you can pick them up on Monday, October 2, i.e. one day before the mid-term exam.

SYNTAX 2 [SEP 24]

I just posted the handout for class 7 which we'll also use for class 8 (plus a recap of what we did last semester in ENG 135: Pedagogical Grammar). In class 7 we will continue our discussion of phrase structure (X'-Theory applied to all categorial phrases) and in class 8 we will discuss clausal structures (IP and CP, perhaps also relative clauses).

SYNTAX 1 [SEP 21]

Just to make sure, the initial syntax discussion is all revision, hence sometimes short (like last class) or sketchy (as on handouts); we will use class time to refresh our memories and do some relevant exercises. The goal is to bring back the basics and then get started with hardcore theoretical issues, so prepare yourselves!

CLASSES [SEP 12]

1. I just posted the corrected handout of CLASS 2 (different affixation site of re- in (6)).
2. Next week we'll deal with today's CLASS 3 handout, perhaps more organized...
3. Hope you're having as much fun as I do! :-)

EXERCISES 1 [SEP 11]

If you want more practice for morphology, here are seven pages of new exercises (also posted on the Exercises-page).

HANDOUT [SEP 7]

I just reposted the CLASS 1-handout with the correct year.
