DESCRIPTION

The course presents an overview of the grammar of English and focuses on topics in English grammar that are relevant to the EFL teacher. It aims at both improving the studentsÕ own English usage and analyzing problems in the English usage of EFL learners. [from the UCY undergraduate catalogue; to be adapted along the following lines:] This course offers a descriptive survey of English grammar and as such is the perfect preparation for ENG 235, in which we will apply an even more theoretical edge to syntactic phenomena.

ASSESSMENT

Regular attendance is strongly recommended! Besides the class lectures, there will be:

  1. one in-class mid-term exam         20% of the final grade
  2. four take-home exercises         40% of the final grade
  3. one in-class final exam         40% of the final grade 17 May 2007, 8.30-11.30am, Room E 111

NB: Participation in the Grammar Workshop will impact your final grade!

Active class participation (beyond showing up) will have a positive impact on the final grade.

My doctoral students Marina Iakovou and Michalis Beys will offer a Grammar Workshop throughout the semester, in which you will discuss the exercises and anything else that remains unclear after the class lectures. Participation is semi-voluntary, but again strongly suggested Ñ especially if you find yourself struggling. WeÕll discuss more details in Class 1.

The homework exercises will be drawn from the set of exercises in the textbook, and I will give you at least five chances to tackle them. If you hand in more than four exercises, the best four count towards your grade. Both exams will also build on (the format of) these exercises. Also, I will hand out additional exercises in class to be discussed in the Grammar Workshop.

READING

There is one required textbook of which every student must have his/her own copy! Apart from the text, this book contains all exercises and can be obtained from Moufflon bookshop.
