ENG 135: PEDAGOGICAL GRAMMAR
FINAL EXAM [APR 19]
As you have probably seen yourselves, the date and time for our final exam has been set for 17 May, 8.30-11.30am in room E 111.
EXERCISES III [APR 17]
The fifth and final exercise can be found on p. 189 of van Gelderen's book. Solve questions A and D. More instructions can be found here.
EXERCISES II [MAR 20]
In today's class I will hand out the latest exercises. The solutions to the exercises on Class Notes 3 may be done in pairs, or even three students (at the very most!). In this case, submit one paper listing all names. Your answer should be typewritten and of around 400-500 words for one student (trees do not count towards this). If you work with one or two other students, it should be longer (though not necessarily 400-500 words per person). This exercise requires you to think, consider arguments pro and con, and so on, and it needs to be fully formulated (in prose). It's due in class on the first Tuesday after the Easter Break (April 17). The exercises for Class Notes 4 are to be done by next Tuesday and submitted in class (March 27). Latecomers will be penalized.
UPDATE II [MAR 13]
The mid-term exam is online now, and so is the key (in case you want to double-check). (The corrected exams will be handed back today and discussed in tomorrow's Grammar Workshop.) The next set of exericses will be made available online on Friday, more about that in class. (It will be shorter!)
EXERCISES I [FEB 12]
The first set of exercises can be downloaded in the form of Class Notes 2. Granted, it's quite a bit -- but it looks more than it is. Also, I give you two options, Option 1 counting as a single exercise and Option 2 counting double. Take my last few points seriously: I really don't think you'll need to write more than 2 pages if you choose Option 1 (i.e. count the exercises single).
UPDATE I [JAN 29]
Now it's official: The Grammar Workshop will be taking place in "our" room E 113 on Wednesdays at 3pm, for about an hour or so. As announced in class, it will start next week, February 7, and then meet every Wednesday during class weeks.
DETAILS II [JAN 26]
I'm not going to distribute handouts in class. Rather I sporadically concoct class notes which can be downloaded (see main course page).
WORKSHOP [JAN 25]
The Grammar Workshop, our new tutorial (this semester and next!), will have to meet Wednesdays, 15-16h. I'll announce this in class tomorrow. There are several factors why your alternative suggestions won't work: Mondays one of my assistants can't do it and Thursday mornings is too difficult room-wise. We *might* be able to get a room, but you'd *have* to be out by 9, and this way there is some flexibility in terms of how long you go on for. Also, splitting the Grammar Workshop in two is not an option. Before I go this route, I want to see it work out first -- meaning that if you all participate and if this format works out in the end, this might be an option for next semester, so it's up to you... :-) Lastly, at least one of you absolutely cannot make it on Thursdays, and since this English minor student hasn't had a formal introduction to linguistics yet, she might be one of you who'd benefit most from the workshop. As soon as we can make room changes, I'll announce the room. The first session will take place next Wednesday, even if there won't be so much to talk about yet. But I suggest you all show up to get used to the tutors and see how this workshop might work out.
DETAILS I [JAN 18]
I'll add some course-related details soon, after our first class.
